Leazes Park occupies a unique place in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. It has provided recreational and respite facilities for the inhabitants of the city for over 130 years. Its location means that it is used by those working in the city, by hospital patients and visitors, by University students and city centre shoppers as well as by the surrounding communities.
By the 1990's the park had fallen into decline and The Friends of Leazes Park formed and helped secure £3.7 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund to restore this Grade II listed park to its original condition.
In recent years our biggest challenge has been the dramatic reduction in the parks budget as a result of reduced local government funding. The Friends of Leazes Park are committed to working together with parks staff and management, looking for new and innovative ways to fund and care for this special 'People's Park' at the heart of the city.
